Bret Wright is an author and the creator, co-publisher, and editor-in-chief of the award-winning ezine for writers, Apollo's Lyre.

Apollo's Lyre

Bret's latest work, a detective novel called Nasty, draws on his experiences in the military, as well as his love of quirky authors such as Carl Hiaasen and Tom Robbins. To read more about the  first book in this multi-part series, click the "Nasty" button in the table of contents, or you can read most of the first two chapters at the ABNA site by clicking here (but make sure to come back and read how chapter two ends!)

What's New

I'm a terminal writing junky.  Writing, no matter the form, is a kind of Zen thing  for me.  If -- you know -- spending hours upon hours poking away at the keyboard were something Zen masters actually did, then I'd be the high guru.  To that end, I've begun another novel tentatively titled BRIDGE.  (This is in addition to working on the sequels and edits to Nasty, of course.)

This book is completely different from the romp that is Nasty (that's NATE to you, buddy!), but it draws on an entirely different side of life.  One of dark secrets and betrayed trust.  We'll see where it goes!

The next installment of Nasty is also in the works.  It will be called NASTY PEOPLE.

Om . . .

01/15/08 -  I've had good news the last couple of weeks.  Several agents have requested the manuscript for NASTY.  This didn't come from just sitting back and relaxing, though.  I sent out a LOT of queries to make it happen.  We'll see what happens there.

Meanwhile, there's more good news on the manuscript.  NASTY has made it into the semi-finals for the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award.  This means that out of the 5,000 entries, NASTY rose to the top 20% or so.  (Actually, it's the top 17%, as they only took 836 of the entries.)  You can help push NASTY to the next round by going to the Amazon site, reading the excerpt from the book, and then writing a review.  Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0011G9XPU

If you write a review, and you got the link from this page, drop back by and sign my guestbook to let me know.  I'll include you on the "Thank You" page of the published work should NASTY win the overall grand prize.

01/19/08 - I'm a member of Pikes Peak Writers, which is a great organization to be a part of.  The PPW puts together the annual Pikes Peak Writers Conference, and, in the off season, hosts several events geared toward helping writers master their craft.

I mention this why?

Well, because PPW members and faculty represent a startling 1% of the semi-finalists in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award (ABNA).  Here's a listing of the fine authors from the PPW whose excerpts you can download for free and review.  If you enjoy being on the cutting edge of the next big thing, perhaps you'll find it with one of these ABNA semi-finalists.

01/24/2008 - I'm still stunned about the reviews NASTY is getting.  By and large, people really like it, and the Publisher's Weekly and Top Amazon Reviewer gushed about it.  The opener to PW's review is  "Nate Jepson (a.k.a. "Nasty") is a solid entry into the P.I. hall of fame."  Wow.  I'm just floored.
